How to get good at it
Three habits that beat guessing
State narrows it fast
Only eleven elements are gases at room temperature and only two are liquids. “It is a gas” cuts 118 possibilities down to eleven before you have spent a single point.
Mass locates it
Atomic weight is roughly 2× the atomic number for light elements, drifting toward 2.5× past iron. A mass of 56 puts you within a couple of squares of element 26 — iron.
Guess to triangulate
A wrong guess is not wasted: you are told whether the answer is heavier or lighter, and whether you landed in the right family, period or group. Two well-chosen wrong answers usually beat two bought clues.
